Hard Boiled Eggs

Have you ever wondered why farm fresh hard boiled eggs are so difficult to peel? It is because the acidic level of the egg white it so low that the albumen (egg white) easily sticks to the inner shell membranes. As the egg ages and becomes more porous, air gets into the egg, carbon dioxide is released and the acidity level of the albumen increases, causing it to stick less. Eggs that you purchase in the store, it takes them at least 30 days to go from farm to store shelf. That’s why they peel more easily.

Herbs

Just as herbs have many health benefits for people, they also have health benefits for our animals. I don’t hesitate to give my animals herbs, especially my chickens. I have a couple of herb and flower gardens where I have plants that I know are good for all my critters and that they will enjoy.

Lunch on a Budget!

Feeding your farm animals doesn’t have to be expensive. You just need to be resourceful and creative.

Prepared feed products that you purchase at your local livestock or pet supply store are great to feed your animals.  They are formulated to provide specific farm animals with their optimum daily nutritional requirements. There is a lot to choose from though and picking the right feed can be a daunting task. They can also be expensive. I find that supplementing a prepared feed with other foods is not only cheaper, but I think it’s better for my animals. Understanding your animals’ nutritional requirements is important and I find that as my understanding increases, my animals’ diets change.

Bunnies Provide Great Fertilizer!

Bunnies are the best! They are soft and have the sweetest faces! My experience with bunnies began several winters ago when three rabbits came to visit and stayed. They shared grain with the chickens and found a barn full of hay! What could be better?

Doggie Dandruff!

We have a black Labrador Retriever. I love her. She is my good friend and trusted companion. She tolerates my faults (I apparently don’t provide nearly enough treats) and I tolerate her’s ( incessant nagging to play fetch just one more time!!! Please!) Contrary to most Labradors, she tends to be picky about the food she eats, if it’s not people food. Although I don’t share my meals with her, she has been know to help herself if something is left a little too close to the edge of the counter. Cookies, butter, pork chops…

Barbed Wire!

What would YOU do with this?

It’s all in your perspective. Some would think this is a mess, an eyesore, a hazard. Others would just think tetanus! I rescued this tangled mess of rusted barbed wire and transformed it into a beautiful home decoration for my nephew’s girlfriend. I hope she loves it!

Frozen!

Grapes were a favorite fruit of my boys as they were growing up. We always had grapes. About 6 years ago I decided to plant a couple of vines and grow my own grapes! I did my research and selected two seedless table grape varieties. They were dormant, bare-root vines that I planted in the early spring after I could work the ground. To support my vines I put up four green T-posts and strung welded wire fencing. My grape trellis is about 5’6” tall and about 8’ long.  I didn’t really expect any grapes the first year, but I didn’t expect one of the plants to die either! The following spring I planted a champagne table grape. It is a smaller grape and pretty sweet. They make very tasty raisins.

Help Me, I’m Molting!

I started my hobby farming with chickens. There is no better way to start your journey with hobby farming and healthy living than with chickens! Chickens are animated and fun to watch. They can be very pretty, when not molting, they are not difficult to keep, AND they give back. That incredible edible egg! Just look at the size of the egg I got this last summer! Yes, it was a double yolker! I was hoping for three yolks, but it was not to be.
